Rhyming with Candy Hearts

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we have a sweet rhyming activity for your kids! And it’s designed for all ages, because rhyming continues to be an important part of phonological awareness even as students move on to more advanced reading.

Let’s get started!

Preparing Your “Rhyming with Candy Hearts” Game

Getting ready to play your “Rhyming with Candy Hearts” Game is as easy as 1, 2, 3! Just follow these simple steps!

  1. Select a level (we’ve included color and black-and-white cards for every level of All About Reading).
  2. Print, cut, and color (if necessary) the playing cards for your selected level.
  3. If desired, laminate your cards.

Playing the Rhyming Game

In this activity, your children match pairs of rhyming words. They’ll make the connection that if they can read wiggle they can also read giggle. We’ve included words from all four levels of All About Reading so everyone can play.

For younger kids, mix up the playing cards and place them on the table with the illustrations facing up so they only have to match the words. rhyming activity playing cards face-up

For older children, you can add an extra level of challenge by placing the cards face down and playing Concentration.

Either way, children should read the words aloud as they match the rhyming pairs.

Continue playing until all the pairs have been matched.

We did this activity today! Even though we are prereaders, my kiddos were still able to recognize similar word structures to identify the rhymes. Thanks for the extra practice!
